26 boats targeted at Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club
Police are hunting two thieves who broke into 26 boats at the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club, making off with alcohol, tools, clothing and personal items.
An investigation has been launched after yachts moored at the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club were targeted by thieves.
The club’s CCTV captured images of the two suspects and the police have recovered forensic evidence from the scene.
The Rear Commodore of the club, Pete Broughton said he didn’t believe the thieves were after sailing equipment.
“We don’t think it is someone particularly connected to sailing as there was equipment available to them, such as hand-held radios, which wasn’t taken,” he explained.
The thieves stole alcohol, tools, clothing and personal items from the boats.
Broughton, who is also a policeman, said the thefts happened during a programme of security improvements at the club.
“We’ve recently invested in our security and are continuing ongoing improvements,” he explained. “Obviously it is frustrating and annoying for the members.”
The Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club has already installed extra lighting, improved the fencing and extended the CCTV coverage.
Extra gates along with other measures are also planned.
So far, it hasn’t been confirmed how the thieves managed to enter the club.
In a statement, Humberside Police said the boats are believed to have been targeted between 4pm on 14 October and 10.30am on 15 October, 2016.
“Of the reports formally made to police, one gives details of items stolen, those being a bottle of rum and a hip flask. Enquiries are ongoing at this time,” said the statement.
Anyone with information – or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area – is asked to call 101, quoting crime reference number 2221601.
