Derelict yacht club in Southend-on-Sea goes up in flames
A fire at Alexandra Yacht Club began on Saturday evening
Alexandra Yacht Club became a raging inferno on Saturday evening after a fire began in the derelict building.
Around 30 fire fighters tackled the blaze at the waterside club in Southend-on-Sea just before midnight.
The wooden building was burnt to the ground as a result of the incident.
Essex fire service incident commander Steve Parker said: “A total of 30 firefighters tackled the blaze into the early hours of the morning and the aerial ladder platform was used to pour water at height onto the burning structure. The building has been completely destroyed by the fire.”
It’s not yet known how the fire started but police have arrested two males, aged 16 and 17, on suspicion of arson. They’ve been released on bail until 12 September.
The two teenagers were arrested at around 3am on Sunday morning after being stopped by police in Westcliffe.
The 140-year-old club house, which was due to be demolished, was closed temporarily last year following fears that it was sinking.
