Search and rescue crews have been stood down after a man's body was found in the search for a missing boater

A body was recovered in the search for a missing boater on Wednesday morning after rescue crews discovered a submerged boat off the Isle of Lewis.

Stornoway RNLI found the homemade boat off the area of Point, with the missing man’s body sadly being located not far from where the vessel was.

Next of kin have been informed of the circumstances.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with his family. No further details regarding his identity will be release at this stage.”

Enquiries are ongoing and a report is due to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Coastguard crews are currently coordinating the search for a man missing on board homemade boat off the Isle of Lewis.

The man left Breivig in his boat at around 7am on Tuesday morning, with concerned relatives raising the alarm later that day at 8pm after he failed to return home.

Unfortunately, the missing man did not give details of where he was going and does not have a radio or mobile phone with him.

Stornoway Coastguard watch manager Carol Collins said: “The Stornoway-based coastguard rescue helicopter, Stornoway RNLI lifeboat, coastguard rescue teams from across the Isle of Lewis, police units and Hebrides Inland rescue are all currently searching for the missing man.

“Sadly we have not found any sign of him or his boat.”

The missing vessel is blue and black, 3m in length and has an outboard engine.
