One man has died, another is critically ill and a third is missing after a fishing boat sank in the Republic of Ireland

A man from Northern
Ireland has died after being rescued from lake Lough Ree on Thursday afternoon.

Another man is
critically ill and a third is still missing after the fishing boat they were on
board sank.

Emergency services
have today resumed the search for the missing man after efforts were stood down
last night.

The three men had been
on a fishing trip in County Westmeath and planned to camp on an island when they reportedly got
into difficulties.

Lough Ree RNLI operations
manager Damien Delaney told the BBC: “We’ll go back to the search area again,
where we left off yesterday evening, start again at View Point.”

“There was quite a
long trail of debris leading right across the lake for a distance of about two
miles, so we’ll be following that trail area today.”

The alarm was raised
by a group of anglers just after 3pm when the men, who they had been due to
meet, failed to turn up.

Rescue crews
discovered the first man at around 4pm yesterday, while the second was found at
around 5.15pm.
