Wreckage from the boat of angler Chris Newton, who died after being rescued off the coast of Cornwall, has been recovered

Wreckage from a boat that belonged to
deceased angler Chris Newton has been recovered off the coast of Cornwall.

A search was launched for the 65-year-old
and his boat last Wednesday after he failed to return from a fishing trip.

Mr Newton spent several hours in the water
before rescue crews found him, however he later died in hospital.

The RNLI’s Plymouth and Salcombe lifeboats
found wreckage from the 13ft boat, Amy
Jane
, near the Eddystone Reef at around 8.30am yesterday.

It’s not yet known how Mr Newton, former
environment director of the States of Jersery, ended up in the water and his
death is being treated as unexplained.

Devon and
Cornwall Police spokesman said: “Police will now carry out enquiries to
fully understand the circumstances of the death, though it’s not being treated
as a suspicious incident at this time.

“Our
thoughts are with the family and small community of the deceased at this
clearly very difficult time.”
