A yacht belonging to a local sailing school in Hamble has been gutted after flames took hold of the vessel

A yacht in Mercury Yacht Harbour has been destroyed after flames tore through the vessel on Monday afternoon.

The Jeanneau 36, which belongs to the Hamble School of Yachting, was moored at one of the harbour’s pontoons when the incident occurred.

Fire crews attended the burning yacht at around 12.30pm and were able to successfully extinguish the blaze but sadly most of the damage had been done.

Nobody was onboard at the time and no one was hurt as a result of the fire.

Harbour crane driver Barney Hayes told the Daily Echo: “It was quite dramatic, the fire burnt through the foot of the mast where the mast sits on the deck.

“That collapsed and then the mast came down. The fire took hold where the gas bottles were and they exploded.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the sailing school’s insurer visited the yacht yesterday to assess the damage.
