A boat in a Cornish harbour became ‘a big ball of fire’ before sinking on Saturday evening
Emergency services were called to Mylor harbour in Cornwall on Saturday evening after a boat went up in flames.
Several members of the public made 999 calls after spotting the fire at around 7pm.
The 20ft boat called Tomboy had been moored in the Cornish harbour when the blaze took hold.
Local restaurant waitress Rosie Corke told the West Briton: “We though it was a barbeque that had gone wrong. The next thing we saw this big ball of fire and everyone in the restaurant went outside to see where it was.
“There was no noise, nothing blew up, it was just a big ball of fire and the boat was sinking.”
The RNLI and fire crews attended the fire onboard the boat, which was 150 metres from the shore.
Unfortunately, emergency services were unable to save the burning vessel and it sank during attempts to extinguish the blaze.
The boat’s owner later confirmed that no one was onboard the vessel at the time of the fire.
