Sailing champion Sir Ben Ainslie has announced that he’s engaged to girlfriend and sports presenter Georgie Thompson.
 
Posting the news on his Twitter account on Tuesday evening, Ainslie said: “Picture says it all. So happy to be engaged to the loveliest woman in the world. Biggles is pretty excited too!”
 
Ms Thompson also took to the social networking site to express her excitement, saying: “This just in… @AinslieBen and I are getting married! Couldn’t be happier. Suspect the honeymoon may involve a boat.”
 
The couple, who’ve been dating since April 2013, recently took part in Bart’s Bash together, a worldwide sailing race in honour of Andrew Simpson. They are often spotted out on the water and recently attended Cowes Week together on board Aislie’s yacht Rita.
 
37-year-old Thompson made a name for her self as an anchor on Sky Sports specialising in motor racing, sailing and Wimbledon before joining Fox Sports in 2013. She also announced in July that she will join the panel on Radio 5 Live’s Saturday morning comedy programme ‘Fighting Talk’.
 
Thompson has said that meeting Ainslie was a ‘thunderbolt moment’ but it took three years as friends before the pair became a couple.
 
She said in an interview with the Daily Mail: “We met through friends at an event and I don’t really know how to describe it. It was a bit of a thunderbolt moment but a thunderbolt that took years before it became anything real.
 
“We were in different places, but then in April the stars aligned and it made sense to be together and we haven’t looked back since. It’s very special… he makes me very happy.”
