The sailing star tied the knot on 20 December in front of friends and family

Olympic sailor Sir Ben Ainslie married TV presenter Georgie Thompson at Hampton Court Palace over the Christmas break.

The couple, who announced their engagement in October last year, tied the knot on 20 December in front of friends and family.

A picture from their special day was posted on Ainslie’s Facebook fan page a few days after the ceremony.

Thompson wore a stunning ivory gown with diamante detail round the waist and a long veil.

The two have been dating since April 2013, with Thompson describing meeting Ainslie as a ‘thunderbolt moment’ in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Despite being introduced some time ago, the pair spent three years as friends before becoming a couple.

“We met through friends at an event and I don’t really know how to describe it. It was a bit of a thunderbolt moment but a thunderbolt that took years before it became anything real”, said Thompson.

“We were in different places, but then in April (2013) the stars aligned and it made sense to be together and we haven’t looked back since. It’s very special… he makes me very happy.”

In a recent column for the Daily Telegraph, Ainslie also said that the honeymoon may involve a boat.
